Top Mentor Award Goes to Dr. Frieden
Dr. Ilona J. Frieden was presented with the Mentor of the Year Award for her commitment to and able demonstration of mentoring, the Women’s Dermatologic Society. Dr. Frieden is a Clinical Professor and Chief, Division of Pediatric Dermatology, University of California, San Francisco. Since 1996, she has served as the mentor to seventeen WDS members through the WDS Mentorship program.
Those she has mentored through the WDS program include: Maria Garzon, MD, Pearl Chu Kwong, MD, Ph.D., Ho Jim Kim, MD, Patricia O’Hare, MD, Dora Chin, M.D., Monica Scheel, MD, Michelle L Bennett, MD, Denise Walker, MD, Jorge Toro, MD, Lori Schaen, MD, Camille Haisley-Royster, MD, Kimberly A. Horii, MD, Catherine Maari, MD, Jennifer A. Steele, MD, Cheryl A. Hull, MD, and Sherry L. Novick, MD.
The Women’s Dermatologic Society established the “Mentor of the Year Award” to honor individuals who have influenced the lives of women dermatologists through their commitment to mentoring.
The first recipient of this award was Frances J. Storrs, MD. Dr. Storrs donated the honorarium to the WDS to establish a mentorship program and the program has received continuous funding from Dermik Laboratories throughout the years. Since 1990, the Mentorship Program has funded over 260 men and women, early in their professional careers, to spend time one-on-one with an established mentor with specific expertise. |

The mission of the Women’s Dermatologic Society is to help women in dermatology achieve their greatest personal and professional potential by striving to foster, promote, and support women’s issues in dermatology; identify, train, and recognize women leaders in dermatology; provide a forum for developing relationships and the exchange of ideas and research relevant to women’s issues; and promote the highest possible standards of ethics, research, patient care and education, as well as public education. WDS is comprised of more than 1,500 members nationally and internationally, representing all sub-specialties in dermatology and work in private practice, academics and research. |
